Data Policy

ISTP/IACG Workshop Data Policy

Introduction

From April 1997 through June 1998 the ISTP/IACG fleet of missions observed a large number of solar eruptive events. A few of these events have been analyzed but there has not been a systematic or comprehensive study of all these events. It is now time to develop a "generic picture" of solar eruptive events from the time they originate from the Sun to the time they reach 1 AU and perhaps beyond.

"Rules of the Road" govern access to and use of data contributed to this Eruptive Events Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) database and data analysis effort. All CDAW data will be managed under these rules.

Data Use and Public Release

This CDAW has an "open" data policy. The Eruptive Events CDAW database is expected to contain a number of different data products such as PI certified KP data (data which can be published), event data, high time resolution data, etc. The initial CDAW database will contain all relevant and appropriate data archived at the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) and the Solar Data Analysis Center (Solar DAC).

All CDAW participants are encouraged to contribute data in support of this CDAW. Data from the CDAW periods will be freely exchanged and accessible to all CDAW participants.

Unrestricted public access to the database will be granted at the conclusion of the first workshop, which end April 30, 1999. The scientific community is encouraged to exercise and demonstrate professional courtesy, appreciation, and prudence in utilizing the openness of the data policy. This would be accomplished, along with greater scientific certainty in the use and interpretation of the data, by engaging the PI and members of the investigative team to collaborate on the planned studies leading to co-authored abstracts and/or publications.

Authorship

When an investigator's data is used in the analysis of an event, the investigator who provided these data should be kept informed of what they are being used for, should be invited at an early and appropriate time to participate in the correlative analysis, and would normally have the option of being a co-author of any resulting publication or presentation, including abstracts.

SOHO Datasets

All SOHO datasets are open to the public and can be accessed at:
