Subject: Halo CME on 2000/02/17

Status: O

LASCO and EIT observed a bright full halo CME yesterday, 2000/02/17. The
event was first visible as a halo at all position angles in C2 at 21:30
UT, although part of it was visible above the S pole as early as 20:06 UT.
The measured plane-of-sky speed of the leading edge was 550 km/s at PA 180
(S pole).

EIT observed an M2 flare from AR 8869 (S22 W21) at 18:52 UT. This flare
was accompanied by an EIT wave. At 20:35 UT, EIT observed a filament
eruption and subsequent M1 two-ribbon flare in AR 8872 (S29 E02). This
event was also accompanied by a wave and dimming, with apparent sharpening
of coronal features all along the central meridian. This latter event
(or maybe both!) is probably related to the halo.

An earlier ejection that may be related to the first of these flares was
observed at 19:31 on the SW limb in C2, although this was not a halo.

Images and movies of this event can be found at the LASCO ftp server:

Best wishes,

Simon Plunkett.
