LASCO and EIT observed two full halo CMEs in close succession on
2001/01/20. The first event appeared as a bright front over the E limb in
C2 at 19:31 UT. This event became a full halo, but remained faint in the
W. The second event also appeared as a bright front over the E limb in C2
at 21:54 UT, and again became a full halo that was faint in the W. The two
events merged together in C3. The measured plane of the sky speeds were
673 km/s at PA 90 (E limb) for the first event, and 1576 km/s at PA 80 (E
limb) for the second event. Only three measurement points could be
obtained for the second event, before the two events merged together.
EIT observed two M class flares from AR 9313, located at S07 E40. The
first was an M1.2 flare beginning at 18:48 UT, and the second was an M7.7
flare beginning at 21:12 UT. Both events were accompanied by significant
coronal dimming and probable wave events.
Images and movies of these events are available at the LASCO ftp server:
ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20010120.
Best wishes,
Simon Plunkett.
