LASCO and EIT observed a halo CME today, 2000/10/16. The event was first
visible in C2 at 07:27 UT, as a bright front over the West limb. Faint
extensions were visible over the East limb at all PA. The measured
plane-of-sky speed was 1226 km/s at PA 270 (W limb).
EIT observed two events on the W limb, one beginning at about 05:48 UT,
and the other at about 06:36 UT. The combination of these events was
reported as a long-duration M2.5 X-ray flare. This indicates that the
event was really a limb event that appears as a halo, presumably because
of deflections of pre-existing coronal structures by the fast CME.
Images and movies of this event are available at the LASCO ftp server:

Best wishes,
Simon Plunkett.
