PLAIN
Very bright, structured halo CME occurred
during a temporary data gap while SOHO was
out of real-time contact.

BT

LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME today, 2000/09/12. The event was
first visible in C2 at 13:31 UT, following a temporary data gap that
lasted almost seven hours, while SOHO was out of real-time contact with
ground stations. The CME was very bright over the S pole, and
the leading edge was followed by highly structured prominence material. A
preliminary estimate of the speed has been made, based on just two C3
images, and gives a speed of 986 km/s at PA 180 (S pole).

EIT images show a long filament on the disk at about S20 W05 at 06:48 UT.
This filament disappeared sometime before 13:26 UT, when a bright arcade
was observed in the same location. This suggests that the filament
erupted, and was probably associated with the CME observed by LASCO.

Movies of this event will be available when the data gap is filled. This
will probably be sometime later today. Images of the event are
available now at the LASCO ftp server:

ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20000912.

Best wishes,

Simon Plunkett.
