LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2002/07/26. The
event was first observed in C2 at 22:06 UT as a bright loop
front over the SE limb; by 23:30 UT the C2 occulting disk
was surrounded, though emission in the NW was faint.
The front first appeared in C3 at 23:18 UT with full
coverage of the C3 occultor by 02:18. The plane of sky
speed of the front was measured as 737 km/s at PA 170 (S).
The CME was most probably associated with an M8.7 X-ray flare
in AR0044, which EIT observed between 21:00 - 22:24 UT with
peak emission at 21:12 centered on S18E30. GOES observed the
flare between 20:51 - 21:29 UT with peak emission at 21:12.
A highly restricted and directed EIT wave was observed in
association with this event, only visible very close to the
flare site. No dimming was observed in association with
this event.
Movies and images of this event are available now at:
ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20020726
Please note also that the most recent C2 images show a
wide partial halo CME in the NW, in association with an
eruptive prominence observed by EIT. SOHO is presently
in a DSN data gap, so a report will be sent once the
full dataset is available.
Best wishes,
Gareth Lawrence.
