Subject: Full Halo CME on 2002/07/15, frontsided (fwd)

Status: O

It has come to my attention that the report for the full halo CME
of 2002/07/15 may not have been dispatched to all its intended
recipients. In light of this I am re-sending the report. Apologies
to those who receive it twice.

Best wishes,
  Gareth Lawrence.

LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2002/07/15. The
event was first observed in C2 at 20:30 UT as a bright loop
front over the NE limb; by 21:06 UT the C2 occulting disk
was surrounded and the leading edge was at or slightly beyond
the edge of the field of view. The front first appeared in C3
at 21:18 UT with full coverage of the C3 occultor visible.
The plane of sky speed of the front was measured as 1078 km/s
at PA 30 (NE). Only three data points are available at this
time as a result of limitations due to the present science
plan, so it is inappropriate to speculate as to whether an
acceleration was discernible.

The CME was most probably associated with an X3.0 X-ray flare
in AR0030, which EIT observed between 20:00 - 20:24 UT with
peak emission at 20:12 centered on N14E01. GOES observed the
flare between 19:59 - 20:14 UT with peak emission at 20:08.
A highly restricted and directed EIT wave was observed in
association with this event, primarily directed by the large
filament channel to the N and W. No dimming was observed

Some preliminary images of this event are available now at:

ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20020715

and these will be updated and augmented with movies once a
better and more complete dataset is available (this will
probably be possible tomorrow morning).

Best wishes,
        Gareth Lawrence.
