Subject: 'Full' Halo CME on 2002/01/04, limb event

Status: O

LASCO and EIT observed a 'full' halo CME on 2002/01/04. A fast, wide
bright front was observed in the NE at 09:31 UT filling the quadrant,
with faint extensions visible around the rest of the disk by 11:07 UT.
The bright front first appeared in C3 at 10:24 UT, with very faint
extensions around the rest of the disk by 12:42 UT. Note that these
faint extensions are only visible in running difference movies. For
reference, the mean plane of sky speed was 958 km/s, with slight
acceleration.

EIT observed a dramatic eruptive prominence centered on N38E87 between
08:36 - 10:29 UT. Disruption was greatly confined to the on- and over-limb
regions with very little on-disk disruption. Thus we determine that the
eruption was for the greater part limb-directed and that any terrestrial
effects will be most likely due to an oblique encounter with a shock.

Please note that running difference versions of the real-time C2, C3
and EIT 195 Angstrom movies are now available. Please go to

and follow the links to either the Java or Javascript pages. At present
these movies are not available at any of the mirror sites. The optimal
bytescaling is still being determined so the format of these movies is
not yet finalised.

Best wishes,
	Gareth Lawrence.
