Subject: Partial Halo CME on 2001/12/28 - limb/backsided
Status: O
LASCO and EIT observed a very fast, bright partial CME on 2001/12/28.
The leading edge was first observed in the SW at 20:06 UT and spanned
~160 deg by 21:06 UT, though it appears somewhat wider since the
CME deflects and disrupts bright streamers to the N and S as it
propagates.
GOES reports an X3.4 X-ray flare between 20:02 and 21:32 UT peaking
at 2045 UT. EIT data clearly show this flare to be on or over the
SE limb, between 20:12 and 21:48 UT peaking at 20:48 UT. This event
has therefore been determined backsided. For reference, the mean
plane of sky speed between 2 and 30 Rs was 2170 km/s.
Best wishes,
Gareth Lawrence.
