LASCO and EIT observed a full halo CME on 2001/03/29. The event
was first observed in C2 at 10:26 UT as a bright narrow front over
the NW limb. The C2 occulting disk was surrounded by 10:50 although
emission over the N pole was faint. The bright front first appeared
in C3 at 11:18 with the C3 occultor surrounded by 11:42. The plane
of sky speed of the fastest region of the front was measured as
991 km/s at PA 78 (NW) with significant deceleration through both
coronagraphs.
The most probable source of the CME was an X1.7 X-ray flare in
AR 9393. GOES records the flare between 09:57 and 10:32 UT with
peak emission at 10:15. The flare was observed in EIT from 10:00
to 10:48 with peak emission apparently at 10:14. Some dimming
and wave motion were observed but these were constrained somewhat
by nearby active regions.
